There are no gaps in that output, so colours are rendered by a continuous curve rather than a few narrow peaks stitched together. Why an LED cannot copy the curve Most domestic LEDs are a blue emitter behind a phosphor coating. The result has improved enormously, but there is still a dip where cyan should be and a spike in the blue. You rarely notice on a white wall and notice at once on a face. The movement your eye reads as alive A wick flame is never still: convection pulls air up through the burner, the flame sways by a millimetre or two, and shadows breathe with it. That is why an electric flicker bulb looks wrong. Its variation repeats, and the eye picks up the loop within a minute. Warmth is only half the story A lamp flame sits well below the warmest LED most shops stock, closer to a heavily dimmed incandescent bulb. Two sources can share a nominal warmth and look nothing alike if one has a ragged spectrum. When people say a bulb looks cheap, they are reacting to colour rendering rather than colour temperature. Where flame light is genuinely worse Do not romanticise it. For reading small print, chopping vegetables or helping with homework, one lamp is not enough and never was. Households in the nineteenth century worked next to windows for a reason. Mixing flame with electric light Let each source do one job. Drop the electric lighting low, keep it out of your sightline, and let the lamp be the brightest thing in the room. If the electric light wins, the flame vanishes and the exercise is pointless. Rules that come with an open flame Burn only proper lamp oil or liquid paraffin. Never petrol, methylated spirit, garden torch kerosene or citronella oil: wrong flash point, heavy soot, fumes you should not breathe indoors. Keep the flame low. A wick turned up high smokes and blackens the glass, giving less usable light rather than more. Ventilate, since an open flame consumes oxygen and produces combustion products. Never leave a lamp burning unattended, and never let one burn while you sleep. Stand it on a stable non-combustible surface, clear of curtains, paper, children and animals. What the first evening looks like Light one lamp in a room you know well and the ceiling goes dark, the walls recede and the table becomes the centre of the space.
